Stays within walking distance of shul
On Shabbat and Yom Tov the walk is the whole decision. A property twenty minutes away in the wrong direction is not a slightly worse version of one that is five minutes away — for many families it simply does not work, particularly with young children, in winter, or when someone in the group cannot manage the distance.
Mapping apps are unreliable here. They route by road rather than by the path people actually take, they ignore hills entirely, and they cannot know which entrance is open on Shabbat. The host can tell you in one sentence, and it is worth asking every time.
What to check before you book
- Ask for minutes on foot to your specific shul, from the host.
- Mention who is walking — a pushchair or an elderly relative changes the answer.
- Ask about the eruv separately. It is not the same question and the answer changes.
- Check whether the route is lit and paved if you will be walking back at night.
